1. Take the job details

   We suggest a crew size for the volume and distance, so you are neither short-handed nor paying for idle hands.

3. Screen the workers

   We check national ID and age and select people with a record of reliable manual work.

4. Brief on safe lifting

   Crews are briefed on team lifting, stacking limits, PPE and reporting injuries before they start.

5. Supply with a crew lead

   For larger crews, one worker leads and reports to your supervisor. You receive the crew list in advance.

6. Confirm the hours

   At the end of the job we confirm hours and attendance with you for payment under the agreed arrangement.

• Casual employee: Paid at the end of each day and engaged for no more than 24 hours at a time, under the Employment Act.
• Conversion: Continuous work equal to a month makes the contract monthly-paid; after two months, full terms of the Act apply.
• Rest days: A casual worker is treated as entitled to one paid rest day after six continuous working days.
• Where wages are paid: Wages must not be paid where alcohol is sold, unless the worker is employed there.
• Deductions cap: Total deductions from wages at any one time must not exceed two-thirds of the wages.
• Housing Levy: Even day-rate labour is covered: KRA says the levy applies to casual wages, 1.5% from each side.

Pay and Safety Rules for General Labourers in Kenya

Most general labour is casual in the legal sense. The Employment Act, 2007 defines a casual employee as someone paid at the end of each day and engaged for no more than 24 hours at a time, and wages for casual work are due at the end of the day. Wages must not be paid in a place where alcohol is sold, unless the worker is employed there.

Watch how often you rehire the same crew. If a labourer works continuously for the equivalent of a month, section 37 treats the contract as monthly-paid, and after two months of continuous work the worker is entitled to the full terms of the Act. A paid rest day after six continuous working days counts towards that period. If the work is regular, a fixed-term contract or staff outsourcing is usually the better option.

Statutory deductions apply to labourers' wages too. Employees contribute to SHIF, administered by the Social Health Authority, and KRA has said the Affordable Housing Levy applies to casual wages. Our payroll services can handle this for you. On safety, the person in control of the workplace must keep labourers safe, provide protective equipment free of charge and report serious accidents.
