Hire Retail Staff in Kenya
Shop assistants, merchandisers and sales promoters for supermarkets, retail chains, brands and distributors in Nairobi and across Kenya.
Looking for retail staff in Kenya to cover the festive season, a back-to-school rush, a store opening or a new product listing? Lynn HR supplies shop assistants, merchandisers and sales promoters to supermarkets, retail chains, pharmacies, electronics and fashion stores, and to the brands and distributors that sell through them.
Retail is customer-facing and fast. The people on your floor shape what shoppers think of your brand, handle stock worth money, and often work long weekend shifts. We screen for presentation, honesty and stamina, and brief each worker on your store standards before the first shift.
Retail staffing sits within our casual workers service. You can engage the staff directly, or Lynn HR can employ them through staff outsourcing and run their pay and statutory deductions.

Retail Staff in Kenya We Supply
We match each role to the store format, the products and the customers you serve.
Shop assistants
Shop assistants greet and help customers, keep shelves full and tidy, check prices and labels, help at fitting rooms and service counters, and support cashiers at peak times. For cash-handling roles, we look for previous till experience and agree controls with you upfront, such as till counts at the start and end of each shift and a named supervisor for refunds and voids.
Merchandisers
Merchandisers visit or stay in stores to set up displays to planogram, rotate stock so older dates sell first, record stock levels and out-of-stocks, and report competitor activity. Brands and distributors often need merchandisers who can cover several outlets on a route, so we ask about travel and reporting tools. Many brands now use phone apps for shelf photos and stock counts, and we screen for the basic smartphone skills these need. Route merchandisers also need clear rules on travel allowances and daily check-in times, which we agree with you before they start.
Sales promoters
Sales promoters run tastings, demonstrations and promotions at the shelf, explain product benefits honestly, and record sales and customer feedback. We look for confidence, good Kiswahili and English, and a clear understanding of what promoters may and may not claim about a product.
- Stock counters for audits
- Packers for festive hampers
- Store opening crews
- Customer service desk relief
How We Screen and Supply Store Teams
Retail staff in Kenya need to be presentable, honest and ready for long shifts. Our process covers all three.
Agree the brief
We confirm roles, stores, shift patterns, dress code, any supermarket rules for brand staff, and how sales or stock will be reported.
Source and select
We look for retail, FMCG or customer service experience and assess communication and presentation.
Integrity checks
We verify ID and age and take references, with extra care for roles handling cash or high-value stock.
Brief on your standards
Workers are briefed on your products, pricing rules, customer service standards and what to do if something goes wrong.
Supply and coordinate
We share the staff list and a named contact, and coordinate store access, badges and uniforms.
Monitor and report
We check in during the campaign, act on store feedback and keep attendance records for payment.

Key facts: hiring retail staff in Kenya
- Daily pay: Under the Employment Act, a casual employee's wages are due at the end of each day.
- Festive campaigns: Shop staff who work continuously for the equivalent of a month move onto monthly-paid terms under section 37.
- Cash shortages: A shortage may be deducted only where the contract specifically entrusts the worker with handling money.
- Deductions cap: Total deductions at any one time must not exceed two-thirds of the wages.
- Rest day: Every employee is entitled to at least one rest day in every period of seven days.
- Housing Levy: KRA applies the Affordable Housing Levy to casual shop wages as well, at 1.5% each for worker and employer.
Employment Rules for Retail Staff in Kenya
Retail staffing often mixes daily casual work with longer campaigns, and the rules differ. Under the Employment Act, 2007, a casual employee is paid at the end of each day. Once a worker has worked continuously for the equivalent of a month, section 37 treats the contract as monthly-paid. For a festive season or a listing campaign running several weeks, plan a short fixed-term contract instead.
Cash handling needs care. The Act allows an employer to deduct a cash shortage only where the contract specifically entrusts the worker with receiving and handling money, and total deductions at any one time must not exceed two-thirds of the wages. Put this in writing before anyone works a till. Our employment contract service can draft the terms.
Every employee is also entitled to at least one rest day in every seven days, which matters for weekend-heavy rosters. Employer bodies such as the Federation of Kenya Employers share guidance on good employment practice, and for help with pay and deductions see our payroll services.
Stores and Locations We Support
We support supermarkets and hypermarkets, convenience stores, retail chains, pharmacies, electronics and phone shops, fashion and footwear stores, hardware and DIY outlets, and FMCG brands and distributors running in-store programmes.
Supermarkets usually have their own rules for brand staff, such as approved uniforms, badges, induction, reporting to the section manager and restrictions on where promoters can stand. We build these into the brief so your team is not turned away at the door. For high-value categories such as electronics, phones and spirits, agree loss-prevention checks and bag-search rules with the store before the campaign starts.
Most requests are for stores in Nairobi, including the CBD, Westlands, Kilimani, Karen, Thika Road malls and Mombasa Road. We also discuss staffing in Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado counties and in other major towns; tell us which outlets you need covered.
Planning Retail Staffing
Share these details so we can plan the right team:
- Roles and number of staff per store
- Store list and opening hours
- Campaign dates and weekend cover
- Whether staff will handle cash
- Uniforms, badges and supermarket approvals
- How sales or stock will be reported
